Getting to this point wasn’t easy
As a Black woman in Corporate America, I experienced many of the same challenges you face everyday.
I had to navigate workplace politics, tone policing, and microaggressions, all while working hard to prove my value and expertise. My career seemed to be going smoothly—I was considered a rockstar, had excellent performance reviews, and my leadership team could count on my work product. But then, an organizational change occurred, and I got a new boss and leadership team, flipping my career upside down.
My new boss had already decided I wasn’t his cup of tea. This meant every move I made and everything I said was scrutinized, dismissed, or met with condescending “bless your heart” type comments, even when my points were valid. The constant microaggressions, gaslighting, and negative feedback, although mostly presented “nicely,” made me question whether I was the crazy one or if I was over-exaggerating my experiences. This self-doubt was something I had never experienced before, and it impacted my ability to communicate effectively.
So I did what our parents always told us—I put my head down, worked incredibly hard, and tried to stay under the radar and not rock the boat.

Instead, it made it easy for others to paint a false narrative about me because I was so focused on my work that I didn’t take the time to build relationships. It made it easy for my boss to discredit me even though I was a subject matter expert.
My hard work also made it easy for people to come to me for guidance and then take credit for my work or knowledge as if it were their own. The final straw that taught me working twice as hard as everyone else wasn’t the answer was when I realized how exhausted and isolated I felt, limiting my access to career opportunities. I needed to find a way to expand my reach and communicate more effectively. This meant that I ultimately needed to own my voice and create the space for my own success.
