I’ll be honest with you:
Reaching the level of success I wanted wasn’t easy
When I started my career I loved it. I was smart, driven and goal-oriented. So, in the early years I did what I was told, worked hard, took on extra projects and delivered on my performance objectives.
👉Taking the more traditional path I was able to get promoted 3x and increase my salary by $50k.🎉
But then...
As I reached middle management, I ended up with a new boss and let’s just say I was not his favorite. Suddenly my hard work or ideas didn’t matter. In fact it was the first time in my career where my boss went out of there way to minimize my voice, to make inappropriate about me, and wanted to literally ruin my reputation.
Since I had never experienced this before I didn’t know what to do.
MY CONFIDENCE WAS CRUSHED!
It felt like I was trapped in that role and my efforts to raise my concerns wasn’t being heard by anyone.
Leaving the company seemed like the only way out.
But I didn’t know if I could find another job that paid as well. Plus, with all I had going on at work I honestly didn’t have the energy to show up clear headed and smiling for interviews.
So I tried:
- Keeping my head down and flying under the radar (but then I was told I needed to interact with the team more)
- Getting multiple certifications to position myself as an expert (but that still wasn’t good enough)
- Reaching out to other leaders for guidance (but the advice was just to stick it out or see what I could change to make things better)
And that's when it hit me:
If I wanted to make it through the most difficult point in my career, I needed to step up my game, reclaim my confidence and become the leader I always wanted to be.
I realized that no one I worked with was going to save me from what was happening even though they could see it and agreed it wasn’t fair.
So I did the work to regain my confidence.
I was then able to the strategic steps necessary to get my career back on track. This included finding ways to work around the limitations my boss had put in place, showing up at work as a leader and setting the tone for my brand.
It was for sure a tough period in my career but I am so glad I had this experience because it was what led me to deepening my knowledge of the corporate environment and mentoring other women on how to avoid these pitfalls.
Once I reclaimed my confidence, it gave me courage to use my voice and despite my boss I finally started to see the results:
✅ Leadership started noticing my expertise and I was given multiple opportunities to present and be in the room with executives and c-suite leaders.
✅ I got promoted and doubled my salary to multiple six figures
✅ Went from an individual contributor to leading a team
